Demolition notifications
You must notify SafeWork NSW 5 calendar days prior to commencing licensed demolition work in NSW.
Notification of demolition work
You must notify SafeWork NSW for any demolition work in NSW relating to:
- a structure, or a part of a structure, that is load-bearing, or otherwise related to the physical integrity of the structure that is at least 6 metres in height, or
- load shifting machinery on a suspended floor, or
- explosives.
Interstate demolition contractors operating in NSW must also notify SafeWork NSW when undertaking the above demolition work in NSW.
You can lodge your notification electronically using the asbestos and demolition online notification system.
For new users of this system, refer to our online notification system user guide (PDF, 1740.54 KB) to set up your profile.
Once you have notified online:
- we'll send you an email to acknowledge we've received your notification
- your work can commence five (5) calendar days after your notification and not before
- we won't send you any further correspondence about your notification, that is, you won't receive an approval
- a PDF output of your notification can be downloaded once the notification is completed.
Emergency demolition
Where an emergency service organisation carries out or proposes to carry out demolition work, the emergency service organisation must phone us on 13 10 50 as soon as possible whether before or immediately after the work is carried out.
An emergency occurs if:
- a structure or plant is structurally unsound, or
- collapse of the structure or plant is imminent.
Our inspectors can issue on the spot fines to any individual or business that appoints an unlicensed demolition contractor to undertake licensed work, and any licensed demolition contractors who fail to notify SafeWork of notifiable demolition work or commences licensed demolition work within the 5 day period.
