39. Provision of information, training, and instruction.25
Specific training must be provided for each of the various types of wood-chippers used at workplace. Training and instruction should be recorded, as well as any refresher training provided.
Document any policies, procedures, training, instruction and site evaluations before work begins.
These should cover:
- hazards associated with the particular machine
- safety features and use
- operation – including starting, feeding, and shutting down
- process for cleaning blockages
- emergency procedures
- maintenance
- transport, including loading and unloading
- points covered in this guide
- PPE requirements26
- testing of the bump bar, operator control device, interlocks, presence-sensing safeguards and recording the test results. These could be incorporated into the SWMS for each site.
