What is this about?
There are more than 500 pyrotechnicians licenced in New South Wales. Every year SafeWork issues about 596 single-use fireworks licences to councils and other event organisers for one-off events. Fireworks are spectacular, however they can also cause significant injury and even death.
We aim to improve worker and public safety around fireworks, and to ensure that license holders are aware of the safety conditions every time they use pyrotechnics.
We have reviewed the current Operational Conditions for Pyrotechnicians and Single-Use Fireworks Licenses and created a new draft that includes proposed changes. These include:
- storage, handling, transport, use and notification of fireworks licences and prepared fireworks displays
- how specific conditions appear in the document (in italics in the draft Operational Conditions)
- more guidance to make the operational requirements easier to follow.
Licence holders who do not comply with the conditions may be fined, have their licence suspended or cancelled, or be prosecuted.
The draft document addresses feedback we have received since the current conditions were published in 2013.
