Crystalline silica and engineered stone
Crystalline silica is a natural mineral found in many products, such as sand, concrete and granite.
Processing materials that contain crystalline silica without appropriate safety controls can present a serious health risk.
Employers must put safety controls in place to protect workers’ health.
Some engineered stone products contain high levels of crystalline silica. The manufacture, supply and installation of engineered stone benchtops, slabs and panels containing at least 1% silica is banned. On-the-spot fines can be issued.
Visit the silica dashboard to find out what action we are taking to reduce the impact of silica in the workplace.
Property owners and home renovators
Engineered stone products such as kitchen and bathroom benchtops do not pose a health risk once installed as long as they remain undisturbed. There is no need to remove them.
If you do need to remove, repair or modify an engineered stone product, contact a qualified tradesperson.
