SafeWork NSW has seen an increase in incidents involving bulls over the past 12 months, with 10 incidents reported, including two recent fatalities.

These incidents highlight the significant risks associated with handling large livestock and the potential for serious or fatal injuries when working near bulls.

Safety information

Bulls can be unpredictable and capable of causing serious or fatal injuries. Take extra precautions when handling bulls, including using well-designed livestock handling facilities, maintaining separation where possible, and ensuring suitable escape routes are available.

Consider ‘reasonably practicable’ control measures to manage the risks associated with handling bulls and other large livestock.

Ensure:

  • Cattle yards, forcing yards, races and loading facilities are designed, maintained and fit-for-purpose, with effective segregation between workers and livestock.
  • Escape routes, refuge points and self-closing personnel gates are well-designed and readily accessible when working around bulls.
  • Bulls are handled in secure, controlled environments. Avoid unnecessary entry into yards, pens or enclosed areas containing bulls.
  • Livestock movements are planned before handling activities commence, including loading, unloading, drafting and treatment tasks.
  • Bulls are assessed for temperament and behaviour before handling. Animals showing aggressive or unpredictable behaviour must be managed appropriately.
  • Workers are adequately supervised and assistance is provided, particularly when undertaking higher-risk livestock handling tasks.
  • Safe systems of work are developed and implemented for cattle handling activities.
  • Workers wear suitable personal protective equipment, including sturdy footwear and other task-specific protective clothing.
  • Workers receive appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision in livestock handling techniques and animal behaviour.
