Transport sector plan
Nationally, the transport, postal and warehousing industry accounted for five per cent of total employment at November 2017.
There are approximately 158,000 workers in the NSW road freight industry, 41 per cent of whom are employed in the road transport sector.
On average, the industry recorded the highest fatality rate and accounted for the second highest number of fatalities over the last five years.
The transport industry is a focus area of the Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy 2012-2022 due to the high rates of fatality and serious injury.
As part of the Work Health and Safety Roadmap for NSW 2022 (Roadmap), SafeWork NSW with industry have developed the Transport Work Health and Safety Sector Plan 2022.
Please note, the Roadmap has been replaced by the SafeWork NSW Regulatory Priorities.
The plan was launched by the Minister for Better Regulation, Matt Kean MP on 21 September 2018.
Through consultation with industry and data analysis the following high-risk areas are identified. The key priority areas in the sector include:
- at risk workers
- musculoskeletal disorders
- working at heights
- mental and physical health
- traffic management
- ancillary (non driving) tasks.
