SafeWork NSW is investigating after asbestos was identified during renovations at the Sydney Opera House on Thursday, 5 October 2017.
Electrical contractors reported potentially asbestos containing material in woven matting while undertaking electrical renovations.
The contractors were wearing personal protective equipment at the time and were not exposed to asbestos.
An occupational hygienist tested the material and confirmed it was friable asbestos.
Work has ceased in the area while SafeWork NSW reviews safe working procedures to ensure compliance with NSW work health and safety laws.
A prohibition notice was not issued as work had already ceased. However, SafeWork NSW inspectors are monitoring the situation closely and will take any action necessary to ensure the health and safety of the workers involved in the construction work.
