SafeWork NSW inspectors are hitting the ski slopes this week, conducting rigorous mid-season proactive checks to ensure workers and visitors alike are being kept safe.

The team of construction, engineering and work health and safety (WHS) inspectors will revisit Thredbo Kosciuszko, Perisher Blue, Charlotte Pass and Selwyn snowfields to follow-up on their initial visit earlier in the year.

The alpine ski area safety compliance program kicked off in May with an industry roundtable involving all snowfield operators. They discussed the safe operation of passenger ropeways including managing the effect sudden strong wind events have on chairlifts and gondolas.

Following the roundtable, SafeWork NSW engineers conducted inspections of the snowfields with a focus on ensuring there are appropriate protections around moving plant as well as induction and safety systems in place for itinerant workers in seasonal workplaces.

Head of SafeWork NSW Trent Curtin said:

“Our inspectors will be meeting with operators to inspect chairlifts and gondolas and making sure workers are appropriately trained.

“Protecting seasonal workers and improving WHS compliance is a SafeWork priority, with collaboration between the government, operators, their workers and the public key to realising this goal.”

“If you’re involved in the ski industry or are planning to visit the ski fields, it’s reassuring to know that such measures are in place to ensure a safe environment for everyone.”
