SafeWork NSW inspectors will be carrying out compliance checks on Notified Displays across the state for all of December 2024 and into January 2025 with a zero-tolerance approach to illegal sale and use of fireworks for the Christmas and New Year period.
SafeWork NSW are the licensing regulator for buying, supplying, storing and setting of fireworks and those individuals must hold a licence. SafeWork NSW continues to work closely with the NSW Police Force to ensure the community remains safe during the holidays.
To purchase, use, store, manufacture, supply and transport fireworks you need either one of the licences below:
SafeWork NSW is emphasising the importance of managing nearby risks posed by environmental conditions such as bushfire dangers as well as providing easy access to emergency services should they be needed.
Operators must also establish exclusion zones at every display in accordance with the Operational Conditions for Pyrotechnicians and Fireworks single use licenses.
Anyone selling, buying, storing, transporting or setting off fireworks without authorisation faces fines of up to $27,500 and 12 months in prison.
All notified displays by licence holders must notify authorities ahead of a fireworks display, such as the NSW Police Force, Fire and Rescue NSW, the NSW Rural Fire Service and the local Council.

“As we bring in the New Year, we all need to stay safe and keep the community harm-free when handling Fireworks.
“Fireworks can be extremely harmful and may lead to death if handled incorrectly. Ensure you’re keeping your friends and family safe by not risking anyone with illegal displays this holiday season and don’t get caught with a fine for illegal fireworks during your New Year’s celebrations.
“We currently have over one hundred displays planned for New Year’s Eve across the state, with numbers increasing each day.
“SafeWork NSW has zero tolerance for illegal activity when handling fireworks. Only those with either a pyrotechnician or single use licence are allowed.
