SafeWork NSW is supporting national amendments to the model Code of Practice for the provision of first aid in the workplace, to help ensure workers have access to immediate care and treatment.

The amendments were released by Safe Work Australia in May 2018 and incorporate the inclusion of new emergency medications in First Aid kits, such as an asthma-relieving inhaler and an epinephrine auto-injector.

SafeWork Executive Director Andrew Gavrielatos said the amendments to the model Code of Practice will support better emergency first aid in a range of working environments and circumstances.

“We fully support Safe Work Australia’s move to consider better first aid resources, especially in high risk workplaces where workers are exposed to allergens or asthmatic conditions – or in remote locations where the arrival of emergency response services are delayed,” Mr Gavrielatos said.

Under Work Health and Safety Regulation, a business has a duty to provide first aid equipment, facilities and training to all staff members. The business must ensure these provisions are appropriate to the nature of work and potential or present hazards as well as the size and location of the workplace.

“To determine which emergency medication needs to be included in a workplace first aid kit, it is vital that businesses conduct a risk assessment and consult with workers, to comprehensively understand the hazards present in their workplace.”

“SafeWork’s main priority in promoting these proposed changes, is to ensure the safety of workers across the State. The reality is, that onsite emergency equipment and medication included in first aid kits can help to save worker’s lives,” Mr Gavrielatos said.
