Worker fatally injured after being struck by a support column (17 November 2025)
A worker employed as a rigger sustained fatal injuries while erecting a steel column. The work involved lifting and positioning a large steel I-beam onto an existing column using a mobile crane and a lifting sling. The rigger was guiding the beam into position from an elevated work platform. During the process, the I-beam fell and struck the worker.
Safety information
Consider ‘reasonably practicable’ control measures to manage the risks associated with crane operations, steel erection and rigging work.
Ensure:
- the worker is competent and/or has relevant experience specific to the lift task being performed
- all workers hold the appropriate High Risk Work Licence with the relevant class or classes to carry out dogging or rigging work in NSW
- all workers have completed a site induction prior commencing their work
- the correct crane is being used for the job
- a Safe Work Method Statement that identifies potential hazards and appropriate control measures is completed before commencing work
- lifting plans are developed for complex or higher risk lifting activities. Examples may include lifting near workers, operating close to rated capacity, stability, radius, or motion limits, and operating with numerous collision hazards close to or within the anticipated motion range
- assessment of the travel path is undertaken to identify influences on lifting capacity. This includes fore/aft/side slope of the surface, ground condition, and required crane articulation angle
- appropriate communication systems are established between the crane operator, dogman and any other workers directly involved in the lift
- loads are slung by appropriately qualified and competent persons
- slinging techniques and gear used are suitable and consider the weight, shape and nature of the load, as well as the conditions that may be present during the lifting operation
- authorised persons do not place themselves at risk of being crushed between the load and any other surface.
