Manufacturer commits $1.5 million to safety improvements after worker injured

Ministerial Media Release | 20/07/2017

Borg Manufacturing Pty Ltd has committed more than $1.5 million for safety programs and improvements following an injury to a worker at their Somersby plant in September 2014.

Borg has entered into an Enforceable Undertaking (EU) with SafeWork NSW after the worker suffered a serious hand injury due to a poorly guarded metal guillotine at the site.

It is NSW’s first million dollar ruling since EUs became part of NSW’s work health and safety laws in 2012. During that time, 29 NSW businesses have committed more than $9.5 million to health and safety improvements as part of EUs with SafeWork NSW.

Minister for Better Regulation Matt Kean commended Borg for its commitment to improved health and safety following the workplace incident.

“Every worker in NSW has the right to a safe and healthy workplace,” Mr Kean said.

“An EU is an alternative to prosecution through the courts, which can offer significantly greater benefits to the workplace, industry and community.

“Borg’s EU offers it the opportunity to make significant and ongoing improvements to work health and safety in the business, and shows industry peers and the broader community that it’s committed to a safer workplace.”

As part of the EU, Borg will:

  • complete a machine safety program across all of its NSW manufacturing sites;
  • develop a work health and safety education program for Borg management;
  • investigate ways to reduce manual handling when loading and unloading Borg trucks;
  • sponsor an online induction program for small businesses for use by the Furnishing Association of Australia (FIAA); and,
  • promote the importance of workplace safety in the community by developing a ‘Safe by Choice not by Chance’ safety campaign.

Following the incident, Borg spent more than $53,000 on work health and safety improvements. The injured worker returned to work in late October 2014 on suitable duties.
